Especially in paediatric patients with a high risk of caries the use of fissure sealants can be an effective method of caries prevention. By sealing the enamel pits, grooves and fissures on the occlusal surfaces of permanent molars with a resin-based material, an impermeable barrier is created between that deep area of the tooth and the oral environment. This is a concern particularly when these pits, grooves and fissures are difficult to clean with a brush due to being deep and thin. So bacteria can enter and cause decay but we are unable to clean. With Fissure Sealants, the risk of caries development in the particularly vulnerable parts of molar teeth is reduced significantly.
